Irani: Online portal to be made available for the nation

Smriti Irani the Union HRD minister, said that for anybody to overcome the disadvantage of an underprivileged background through firm resolve the blessing of elders is possible.

Smriti Irani said to TOI, “Even if you are born in a humble family , or worked in a restaurant, you could be a Union cabinet minister. I am a living proof of that. Remember, our Prime Minister also went to a government school and sold tea. This is a country of possibilities.”

On Wednesday, June 17, Irani was addressing a gathering of about 2,000 learners celebrating five years of Teach India which was held at New Delhi Siri Fort main auditorium

Smriti Irani remembered the days of her past when she worked at McDonalds when her family lived in a small room in Munirka. She also shared how she was rejected for a job by three companies which included NDTV and Jet Airways. She praised the companies who have been recruiting learners and played the role of enablers. She said, “You have given wings to the dreams of the young. I know the disappointment of doors shutting on you.”

The HRD minister stressed on the importance of matri bhasha or our mother tongue along with the importance of English.

Irani said that learning English is important but only because it is a vital means to facilitate careers and not because it helps overcome something lacking in our personality.

The government will shortly dedicate the online portal called Swayam to the nation as said by Irani. She said that the online portal will offer courses which are taught in top institutions for free. The subjects will range from Science to Humanities.  she said that the courses will be available for download on apps which will be for free
