Amazon has revealed plans to develop “an ambitious new PC game project using the latest technology”.
The company made the announcement through a series of recruiting ads posted on gaming site Gamasutra, which indicate that the project will use “technical innovation to radically evolve gameplay”.
The games will use Amazon’s proprietary cloud service as well the popular streaming service Twitch, which the company purchased last year for US$970 million.
Games Amazon’s current developers have worked on include Portal, World of Warcraft, BioShock, Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead, Dota 2, Halo, Infamous, Shadow of Mordor, and The Last of Us. Last year, Portal co-creator Kim Swift and Splinter Cell game director Clint Hocking joined Amazon as senior game directors.
Though Amazon has had clear ambitions as game developers for a few years now, its focus so far has been primarily on mobile. Its most notable project is probably horror game ‘Til Morning’s Light.
Further details about Amazon’s PC game plans are scant, however the company has emphasised its belief that “games have just scratched the surface in their power to unite players”, and said its intention is to produce “some of the future’s most influential voices in media and art”.
