City education officials unveiled a new science curriculum Thursday to better prepare kids for the white-hot fields of science, technology, engineering and math — better known as STEM.
The city’s updated science curriculum covers kindergarten through fifth grade, with lessons tied to new, national Common Core standards.
“This new, cutting-edge curriculum will encourage students to explore, deeply understand and celebrate science — whether it’s in the classroom or at the beaches, parks and waterways around our city,” said city Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña.
The new framework ranges from the human body to the Milky Way. It has a greater emphasis on the environment compared with the old version of the curriculum, which was last updated in 2008.
The new curriculum will be sent to all city elementary schools and is available online. Teachers are expected to use the new lessons starting in autumn and will receive training starting this summer.
