OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A former Shawnee Mission West High School student was arrested and faces criminal charges after allegedly making threats against current students at the Overland Park high school on Wednesday.
According to Overland Park Police, 19-year-old Zachary Perry faces charges of aggravated criminal threat in connection to the incident. Authorities say that investigators found multiple guns at Perry’s home, located just one block away from the school.
Authorities say that there were several hundred students inside the school at the time for summer courses.
Shawnee Mission School District Police Chief John Douglass says that Perry communicated with multiple students at the school that he planned to cause them great bodily harm and he would go home and get weapons to do that.
“This has a lot of features to a typical of school shootings, there’s a lot of indicators and markers that make it look very unfortunately familiar,” said Douglass. “I think the really good news is that the system from top to bottom worked hard.”
