The Odisha government’s decision to raise the percentage of reserved seats for SC and ST students in higher education has received a lot of flak and protest from the students. An anti-reservation demonstration was staged by the students of SCB Medical College and Hospital. The medicos of the government-run teaching hospitals in Berla and Burhampur also accompanied the students and took to the roads in anger and frustration against the decision.
Naveen Patnaik was the target as students held placards and shouted slogans against his government and the decisions they took. The students threatened to be more destructive in their approach if the government did not decide to undo its decision regarding the reservation policy in higher education.
Road rage and and an uproar among students happened when the state government decided to increase the reserved seats for SC students from eight to 16 percent and from 12 to 22 percent for the ST students for the session 2015-2016.
Students from the General category are afraid that this decision would affect the health services in the state and would end up deteriorating the quality of the education as well. The main plea of the students of the General category is for the government to roll back the reservation immediately
