B-grade rating given by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), to the Visva-Bharati University founded by Rabindranath Tagore, has amazed the University officials, the faculty as well as the students.
The university scored 2.82 grade points and was placed in the B-grade category on May 11, 2015.
According to a source, the enshrined university which was once a point of interest and attraction for foreign students and researchers did not get a C-grade only because it was associated with Rabindranath Tagore.
Visva-Bharati scored low in the academic evaluation, research and especially in the library facilities. Hardly any new book has been added to the library stock in years lately.
A daily quoted Rajesh K Venugopal, secretary of one of the teacher associations saying, “It’s true that we could not buy enough books for our library due to funds crunch. But the NAAC team appreciated the performance of Kala Bhavana.”
A member of the alumni said “It is a matter of shame and sorrow. I believe NAAC is a qualified organization and they maintain objectivity. They have not made any mistake. It is our fault. We can only hope that Visva-Bharati does a SWOT analysis and plugs the lapses.”
“Performance of departments varies a lot. As a result, the overall assessment suffers. Visva-Bharati has some typical problems that have come in the way of its progress,” former Visva-Bharati vice-chancellor Sujit Kumar Basu said.
Gora Sarbadhikari, who taught music in the University, is not surprised by the ratings. “It is not unexpected. The quality of teaching-learning has been deteriorating. The authorities seldom seek our advice,” he said
