IIT Madras: Only 7 percent of students are from Tamil Nadu

One of the premier institutes, Indian Institute of technology (IIT) Madras witnesses a mixture of different cultures in the classroom and this premier institute plays a host to students from across the country. Astonishingly, only 7 percent of students in IIT Madras are from Tamil Nadu as there is no lack of top engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, IIT Madras is not the only option for aspiring engineering students in the State.

Although students have a long history of choosing IITs as one of their preferred choices, but Tamil Nadu has alternatives to choose and pick from. In the state many engineering institutes have received lakhs of applications. This could be one of the reasons why there is a low number of students who appear for JEE in Tamil Nadu, as compared to other states.

More than 1,100 students who qualified for the JEE (Advanced) in the State did not appear for the examination. The IIM Madras faculty members said that many students opt out of appearing for the examination if they have applied for other engineering colleges or if they score a lower rank.

The number of applications received have increased over the years as said by institutions like VIT, SRM and SSM. Two lakh candidates have registered for VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE), while around 1.75 lakh applications have been received by SRM University for its entrance examination to the B.Tech course, this year.

A faculty member from SRM informs that this year the number of applications have raised 40 percent from last year’s. Tamil Nadu has the second highest number of students applying to the university.
