Microsoft and Windows Phone’s absence from the flagship game is well documented, and is something that CEO Satya Nadella, along with mobile chief Terry Myerson and other Redmond influencers, has promised to rectify. After incessant talk of aLumia 940 and 940 XL, it is now strongly suspected that Microsoft’s top-tier handsets will carry the Lumia 950 and 950 XLmonikers instead. That being a largely irrelevant side-story, we do know quite a bit about the Lumia 950, codenamed Talkman, and the XL edition, referred to internally as Cityman.
The latter will assume the role of phablet, with the most recent reports touting a 5.7-inch display, but much like the leak detailingthe specs of the Lumia 550, 750 and 850, we cannot yet put a face to the name. The folks at Windows Central have had a go at coming up with a plausible preview of the Lumia 950 XL, and you can peep the renders below.
Concepts are dreamed up all the time by fans, designers, blogs and so forth. Often, we’re left drooling over the unrealistic dreams of hardcore fans. In this instance, though, Windows Central has considered reports, sketches, and leaked information on the device to offer an accurate representation of what’s next from Microsoft. In fact, the blog ran the images by a source familiar with the matter, and said source confirmed that the renders were “like the real thing.”
The report does make the point that the images have been created in-house, so they’re not going to be completely accurate for now. Still, what you’re seeing below is said to be pretty darned close to the real deal, and while the squarish design mightn’t appeal to fans of the iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy S6 edge aesthetic, it’s still a very nice-looking handset based upon these angles.
Housed in polycarbonate, the Lumia 950 XL will boast a quad-HD 1440 x 2560 OLED display, 3 GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 810 processor. Despite the clear effort to keep up with the Joneses, the problematic Qualcomm chip — which has hindered Sony, HTC and many others in recent times — could once again deter consumers with its history of thermal woes. Additionally, at a time when even Samsung is ditching the plastic, the outer shell mightn’t feel premium enough to some. But if nothing else, one can stake good money that the 20-megpixel PureView shooter — inclusive of triple LED flash — will be top notch.
