Getting admission in an IIT is what a science student dreams of, right from their school days. Its admission process has always been surrounded with much hype. Despite all that, over 25,000 students who were shortlisted for the JEE Advanced this year, decided to give the registration and admission process a miss.
13 lakh students appeared for the JEE (Main) 2015 and as many as 1,50,000 students qualified for the JEE (Advanced). Apart from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad offering admissions, IIT Chhatisgarh, IIT Goa and IIT Tirupati have also decided to offer seats after this year’s JEE (Advanced). This would definitely mean an increase in the number of seats for the students, giving them more opportunities as well.
A student can seek admission in an IIT if he/she scores 75 percent under the General category and 70 percent under the SC/ST category, and is among the 20 percent top contenders in their Class 12 exams.
The trend of students not opting for JEE (Advanced) has been prevalent over the years and the main reason for it is considered to be the students’ hesitation in living away from home and parents. Students belonging to the OBC or SC/ST categories, afraid of scoring well, decide to keep themselves away as well.
