The awards, which collected votes from over 26,000 students, saw UK universities gain recognition in 12 categories.
Aberystwyth University came second in the International category, and Swansea University followed in third place.
“The fact that students are kind of endorsing what we do is really important”
Nikki Padget, head of international student recruitment at the University of Exeter, said she was thrilled the university won the award, especially as it’s decided by students.
“It’s really important that we listen to their views,” she told The PIE News. “I think it’s quite easy to make lip service to that, but the fact that students are kind of endorsing what we do is really important.”
The awards were presented by British comedian, David Mitchell, at the ceremony held in central London.
Harper Adams University won the University of the Year award for the second year in a row, followed by Loughborough University in second place, and Bangor University in third.
Aaron Porter, director of insights at Hotcourses Group, also took to the stage to commend the contribution students and student unions make to universities.
“They often provide the bedrock and the centrality of our wonderful student experience,” he said.
Porter also commented on the quality of UK universities despite tough political and trading environments.
“Our universities step up to the plate and are remarkably resilient,” he said. “We should take stock and sometimes not worry so much about things that are thrown at us, but take the opportunity to reflect on successes, and actually take the chance to celebrate the wonderful work that we do across UK universities.”
