With Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day falling on back to back days this February, the upcoming holiday weekend is shaping up to be a busy one for travel.
For those planning a holiday getaway, here are five U.S. hotels where you’re guaranteed to feel like the leader of the free world.
Hilton Chicago
Where: Chicago, Illinois
This historic hotel in downtown Chicago dates back to the 1920s and has hosted a dozen presidents over the years.
President Harry Truman (1945-1953) was the first president to experience Hilton Chicago’s 5,000-square-foot Conrad Suite but certainly wasn’t the last. Every president who followed Truman also stayed at this hotel and current President Barack Obama (2009-present) has held several press conferences at the hotel.
You’ll have a tough time booking the Conrad Suite, but room rates here start at just $119 per night.
Library Hotel
Where: New York, New York
New York’s Library Hotel hasn’t been around nearly as long as the Hilton Chicago. Nonetheless the 16-year-old property is full of history.
The building that houses the hotel was once home to the office of President Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909). After serving two terms in the White House, Roosevelt worked as an editor for news magazine “Outlook” inside the Madison Avenue building.
Waldorf Astoria New York
Where: New York, New York
Elsewhere in the Big Apple, travelers would be hard-pressed to find a more presidential accommodation than the Presidential Suite inside the iconic Waldorf Astoria New York.
The suite has hosted every president dating back to President Herbert Hoover (1929-1933) and features a plethora of unique artifacts, including one of President John F. Kennedy’s (1961-1963) rocking chairs and President Jimmy Carter’s (1977-1981) eagle desk set.
Although you won’t find JFK’s rocking chair in your guestroom, there’ll be no shortage of luxury amenities.
Hilton Hawaiian Village
Where: Honolulu, Hawaii
Outside the continental U.S., Honolulu’s Hilton Hawaiian Village remains a popular resort for presidents.
Sure, President Obama has spent some time at his hometown Waikiki Beach resort. But he wasn’t the first Commander in Chief to vacation at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Presidents Gerald Ford (1974-1977), Ronald Reagan (1981-1989) and Bill Clinton (1993-2001) have also made appearances.
Amway Grand Plaza Hotel
Where: Grand Rapids, Michigan
As a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, President Ford made many visits to theAmway Grand Plaza Hotel. In fact, the 38th President made so many that each guestroom at the hotel features a brass sign on the door indicating how many times he and First Lady Betty Ford stayed inside.
Today, event space at the hotel includes the Gerald R. and Betty Ford Presidential Ballroom.
What’s more, guests can journey across the Grand River to visit the Gerald R. Ford museum where Ford was laid to rest nearly a decade ago.
