Samsung Gear A smartwatch rumored to be unveiled on Aug 13 with limited Samsung Pay capabilities
Yesterday Samsung confirmed that it is holding a special event on Aug 13, one where the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ are expected to be unveiled. Although the media has largely focused on Samsung’s two upcoming handsets in the past couple of months, a new report from the Wall Street Journal claims that the company might also unveil a new Samsung Pay-enabled smartwatch at the same event. The report doesn’t call out the Samsung Gear A by name, but this is our best guess given how much was rumored and leaked about the upcoming Samsung smartwatch.

Earlier this year, rumors emerged that Samsung is working on launching its first curved smartwatch, a device that was said to be referred to as Orbis internally. Back in May, Samsung launched a new Gear SDK(Software Development Kit) that showed how Tizen would work on a rounded smartwatch, all but confirming the existence of the Galaxy Gear A.

According to previous rumors, the Samsung Gear A will come with a 1.65-inch curved Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 360 by 360 pixels, a heart rate monitor, GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Other rumors also suggested that the Gear A will also come with cellular connectivity. Judging on the leaks and rumors, the Samsung Gear A’s most interesting feature will be a rotative dial, one that can be used to navigate through the operating system.

If the sources by the WSJ turn out to be accurate, then the Gear A will launch with Samsung Pay on board, although the report talks of a limited form. At the moment, it’s unclear just how much of a limitation we’re looking at, and it’s also unclear for how long the Gear A will be the only device that can use Samsung Pay.
